They design digital products and services, organizational processes, and complex systemic changes, making their work highly diverse.

About the Role

As the Practice Lead, you'll be heading up the Design and Research function, serving as a strategic leader who champions human-centred design across the business. You'll also be leading a small team of designers and researchers, and you'll be joining at a time where you have a real opportunity to shape the design and research community.

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Leading the design and research team, setting strategy, and ensuring project quality.
  • Contributing to data and digital leadership within the organization.
  • Defining best practices, establishing workflows, and creating training materials.
  • Mentoring and developing the design and research team, fostering continuous learning.
  • Advising on design research methods and critiquing colleagues' findings.
  • Driving human-centered design, collaborating with data and development teams.
  • Overseeing complex, multi-stakeholder research projects on social issues.

About the Ideal Candidate

We're looking for someone with:

  • Experience leading design or research teams in complex public sector environments.
  • Ability to navigate stakeholders and influence senior leaders.
  • Skilled in balancing user needs with budget and technical constraints.
  • Strong research analysis skills and understanding of ethical considerations.
  • Experience working with diverse users and mentoring junior researchers.
  • Collaborative and clear communicator, able to lead projects independently.
  • Familiar with UK digital transformation best practices and GDS standards.
  • Experience in Agile, digital innovation, and tools like Figma or Miro is a plus.
  • Consulting or agency experience is desirable.

Compensation

The salary for this role is £75,000 - £85,000.
