Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher
Main Purpose of the Job:
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK. The successful candidate will be responsible for accessing the hidden chemical potential of unique Streptomyces species, deciphering the resulting natural products chemistry, and delineating their biosynthesis.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify, plan, and execute experiments to meet the objectives of the project
- Prepare results, reports, and manuscripts for publication in leading scientific journals
- Collaborate with colleagues within the Institute in the development of original and world-class research
- Contribute to the smooth running of the group, including the effective use of resources and supervision of visitors to the laboratory
Person Profile:
Education & Qualifications:
- PhD (full award or expected within 6 months) or equivalent in Biological Chemistry
- BSc or equivalent in Chemistry or Biochemistry
Specialist Knowledge & Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of natural products chemistry and biology, especially structure elucidation
- In-depth knowledge of streptomyces microbiology
- Use of MS for complex structure determination
- Use of NMR for complex structure determination
- Protein purification
- Microbial molecular genetics
- Bioinformatics skills
Relevant Experience:
- Experience of oral research presentations
- Proven record in scientific writing
- Demonstrated ability to perform research and develop novel ideas in natural product function and chemical ecology
- Experience of supervising, training, and mentoring visitors and students
Interpersonal & Communication Skills:
- Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to follow instructions/Standard Operating Procedures
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, using initiative and applying problem-solving skills
- Excellent time management and organisational skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to present complex information with clarity

- Ability to undertake occasional travel (national and international) related to collaborations and/or seminars
- Willingness to embrace the expected values and behaviours of all staff at the Institute, ensuring it is a great place to work
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of information where appropriate
- Willingness to work outside standard working hours when required
