Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled Healthcare Assistant/Housekeeper to join our team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our neonatal unit, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality care to our patients and their families.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of the shift leader to participate in the clinical care provided to babies, prioritizing workload appropriately and developing competencies that safeguard practice and effectiveness in role.
  • Have proficient attitudes and behaviors compatible with NHS and Trust Values.
  • Work as part of a designated clinical and care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual.
  • Assist babies with personal hygiene and support moving and handling, use of mobility aids, correct babies positioning, assess pressure areas and skin integrity.
  • Develop positive relationships with parents, families, and carers, and be aware of the babies' needs – emotional, social, physical, and cultural.
  • Work as part of the team in a co-operative, professional, and constructive manner, and be actively involved in health promotion such as smoking cessation and infant feeding choices.
  • Maintain confidentiality, report any information regarding the wellbeing of the babies to the Registered Health Care Professional in a timely manner, and support individuals who are distressed.
  • Manage and organize time and activities to support and meet the needs of individuals.

Person Specification

  • Evidence of basic level qualification in English and Maths or able to demonstrate equivalent experience.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in healthcare, and NWNODN nonclinical support worker course or equivalent.
  • Comprehensive post-training experience, and demonstrates awareness of what neonatal care involves.
  • Experience of working with babies under 3 months of age, and willingness to undertake further study and development.
  • Work experience within the role of housekeeper or similar appropriate post.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Basic IT, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to manage and prioritize workload without direct supervision.
  • Basic level of decision-making autonomy.
  • Ability to recognize limits to own knowledge and skills and take steps to seek help.
  • Teaching skills in parentcraft and health education.
  • Able to communicate effectively and sensitively with parents and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues across health and social care settings.

Additional Requirements

  • Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e., with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
  • Willingness to work across paediatric wards if required.
