Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our dedicated team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279). We are seeking a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual with previous experience in chronic respiratory disease management and a keen interest in further development.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a caseload of patients with asthma, COPD, ILD, and bronchiectasis, and will work closely with GPs, practice nurses, and nurse practitioners to support the screening, planning, and monitoring of patients. The post holder will also be involved in education, audit, and research, and will support the development of the severe asthma service.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Leading best practice in nursing care of patients with asthma
  • Supporting patients with asthma, including contributing to planning diagnostic work-ups and assessing suitability for pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Completing and sending necessary information to the severe asthma MDT to support patient initiation on biologics
  • Assessing, monitoring, and providing asthma action plans in nurse-led clinics
  • Performing spirometry and acting as a patient advocate and counselor
  • Collaborating with other professionals and services in secondary and primary care to achieve a seamless service
  • Providing a telephone support service for patients and healthcare professionals
  • Acting as an autonomous practitioner and providing nurse-led clinics, requesting, performing, and interpreting diagnostics
  • Demonstrating nursing practices relevant to the area of asthma, ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostics
  • Applying excellent analytical and judgment skills to interpret and compare a range of options on patient care
  • Acting independently, using initiative, and being accountable for own actions in the hospital and outpatient setting
  • Being computer literate, able to use databases and other relevant programs
  • Educating and training other health professionals, motivating and enthusing others, and working across professional boundaries
  • Communicating and influencing effectively, and participating in research and/or clinical evaluation and audit
  • Presenting relevant written and visual educational material
  • Being flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of a changing service
  • Raising the profile of asthma in the trust, locally, and nationally, and actively participating in the promotion of asthma health
  • Acting in accordance with the NMC code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses, Midwives, and Nursing Associates
