Job Summary

The Congenital Cardiac Service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals is a supra-regional service, serving a population of millions in the Yorkshire and North Trent region. The annual workload of the department is recovering after the pandemic and aims to perform 500 operations comprising neonates, infants, children, and adults with congenital heart disease.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will assist the Consultant Surgeons in the operating theatre for 2-3 days per week and support the cardiac ICUs and wards. They will attend the weekly multidisciplinary meeting and departmental audit meetings and attend the outpatient clinic. The post holder will participate in the 1:5 non-resident on call rota for the Congenital Cardiac Surgery Service.

Leeds Childrens Hospital covers 27 medical and surgical specialties and is one of the largest specialist childrens hospitals in the country. We have over 20 inpatient wards, employ over 800 nurses and last year held over 170,000 outpatient appointments and treated over 25,000 surgical patients both electively/non-electively.

The post holder will have the opportunity to contribute to the teaching programmes within the department and participate in the audit programme. The Clinical Director will agree an appropriate programme of CPD and Appraisal with the post holder. Research is encouraged.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCS 1 or equivalent at time of application

Experience

Essential

  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
  • Evidence of achievement of ST3 competences in congenital cardiac surgery or equivalent at time of application
  • Training in adult cardiac surgery and preferably has experience in congenital cardiac surgery
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs

Language Skills

Essential

  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following
  • Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English
  • or
  • Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) results showing a score of at least in each domain (speaking, listening, reading, writing), with an overall score of at least , to be achieved in a single sitting and within 24 months of the time of application
  • If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills, but do not have evidence in one of the above forms, they must provide alternative supporting evidence of language skills
