At NPL, we are at the forefront of innovation in telecommunications security. Our UK Telecoms Lab (UKTL) is a cutting-edge research facility that aims to keep our networks safe, accelerate 5G roll-out, and grow our telecoms sector.
We are seeking an experienced Cyber Security Engineer to join our team responsible for maintaining the organisation's security. The successful candidate will contribute to operational support, project delivery, and SOC activities, ensuring system vulnerabilities are addressed through effective patch and lifecycle management.
The role involves reviewing and acting upon security alerts generated by tooling, monitoring the environment for potential threats, and serving as an escalation point for other members of the security team. You will also contribute to the development of SOC procedures and documentation, assist with remediation activities, and produce new workflows for automation tools.
As a key member of our team, you will have opportunities to work on ground-breaking cyber security and networking technologies on a national and international scale. This includes first-hand exposure to the latest technologies via research and development aimed at securing our telecommunications networks.
You will interact with senior government department officials, communications industry leaders, and academic professionals, all key stakeholders in the work of UKTL. Your expertise will be sought after to coordinate meetings and briefings, allowing you to develop strong relationships and contribute to strategic decision-making.
UKTL interacts with standards bodies, such as 3GPP, the National Cyber Security Centre, and the wider UK intelligence community, academia, Ofcom, and Communications Service Providers and telecommunication equipment vendors. As a trusted and independent national capability, you will be part of a dynamic team shaping the future of telecommunications security.
In this role, you will contribute to the development and implementation of technical controls from endpoint to cloud, ensuring the highest level of security across a diverse portfolio of systems. You will be responsible for maintaining and implementing these controls, enabling seamless project delivery and supporting our SOC activities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing and acting upon security alerts generated by tooling.
- Monitoring the environment for potential threats, vulnerabilities, and indicators of compromise.
- Serving as an escalation point for other members of the security team, providing assistance and mentoring where necessary.
- Contributing to the development of SOC procedures and documentation.
- Assisting with remediation activities.
- Producing new workflows for automation tools.
Successful candidates must be able to commute to our UKTL offices in Birmingham at least twice a week, with options for hybrid working arrangements dependent on the role and business requirements.
We strive to offer a great work-life balance and flexible working options. If you're looking for full-time, part-time, or flexible arrangements, we'll try to accommodate your needs.
A competitive salary of around £60,000-£80,000 per annum reflects the importance of this role in maintaining our organisation's security and contributing to the growth of our telecoms sector. If you're passionate about cybersecurity and want to make a difference, apply now.
