About the Year in Industry:
This placement position is designed for university students undertaking a 12-month placement, who will join our Modelling Team in Materials and Analytical Science.
Materials and Analytical Science plays a vital role in the life cycle of warhead components and technologies, ensuring the reliability of the UK's strategic deterrent and national security mission. A nuclear warhead comprises a diverse range of materials, including metals, ceramics, inorganic salts, rubbers, foams, adhesives, high explosives, and radioactive substances. Our team is crucial in understanding and predicting the behaviour of these materials under various conditions.
As a Materials & Systems Modeller, you'll have the opportunity to work on exciting projects, developing models and codes, utilising various programming languages, and contributing to the full model development lifecycle, ultimately helping to deliver our mission.
The role is designed to help you gain experience in:
- Collaborating with Materials and Analytical Scientists to characterise material ageing processes, proposing approaches to model observed trends
- Applying statistical techniques to analyse experimental data
- Writing, developing, and running codes in a range of languages (e.g., MATLAB, Mathematica, OpenFOAM, and R)
- Utilising computational techniques for parameter optimisation
- Verifying and validating codes by identifying suitable test cases and determining analytical solutions where appropriate
Requirements:
