Job Description

Job Title: Transportation Director

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Transportation Director to lead and manage our Public Transport Team, responsible for delivering highway authority functions related to public transport. The successful candidate will act as a liaison between internal teams, the West of England Combined Authority, and other key stakeholders, including bus operators, other councils, and wider stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent the Council as the lead advisor on public transport matters in meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Liaise with the West of England Combined Authority to support the delivery of high-level plans and initiatives to improve the provision of public transport in line with the Local Transport Plan and associated Bus Strategy.
  • Work with bus operators and external partners to support the effective delivery of transport services to all sectors of the community to encourage greater use of public transport.
  • Support the negotiation of public transport contributions from new developments for bus services and/or infrastructure.
  • Develop and secure support for proposals to improve the public transport offer and be responsible for drafting and presenting reports to inform decisions.

Requirements:

  • Hold a professional qualification in a related field (MCILT) or a degree in a related subject or have significant relevant specialist experience.
  • Have a detailed understanding of public transport operations and the ability to develop and maintain effective working partnerships with external organisations.
  • Have significant and detailed knowledge of the legislation and regulations relevant to public transport operations.
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of implementing change and innovation with experience of successful negotiation with representatives of other public or private businesses, organisations, community groups, and members of the public.
  • Have experience of applying strategic awareness to problem-solving and decision-making to drive change management and commercial awareness.
  • Have a good understanding of local government processes.
