Job Overview

A skilled Microbiologist Scientist is required to support the environmental water surveillance activities of the Environmental Research Laboratory. The successful candidate will maintain the existing portfolio of water testing and acquire new business and diagnostic methodologies.

The role involves supporting the Quality systems and Technical management aspects of the laboratory and new diagnostics adopted within the framework. An MSc in a relevant field is essential, and competence in validating and optimizing in-house methods is required. Microbiology and academic research experience of culture microbiology, molecular identification, MALDI-TOF Mass spectrometry, environmental screening/sampling, and bacterial genomic extraction are necessary.

The candidate will support the development and acquisition of new projects and testing requirements related to the environmental surveillance function. They will also maintain and recover existing pathogen isolates from clinical and environmental libraries by culture and develop in-house methods and optimize new techniques.

Main Duties of the Job

  1. Support the existing portfolio of environmental testing.
  2. Support development and acquisition of new projects.
  3. Maintenance and recovery of existing pathogen isolates.
  4. Development of in-house methods.
  5. Quality control evaluation and assessment of methods.
  6. Lead departmental meetings and write departmental SOPs.
  7. Writing of academic papers and/or generation of data to support grant applications.
  8. Dissemination of findings in local or international conferences or meetings.
