Job Title: Head of Religious Studies

Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: £36,745 to £56,959 + TLR 2B

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the Religious Studies department at a community academy in Southwark. The core purpose of this post is to be the Head of RSE and Health Education and lead teaching within this subject. The role will involve strategic oversight of Key Stage 3 and 4, with planning ahead for the growth into Key Stage 5 for the first time in the school's history.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Religious Studies department and develop a vision for the subject area
  • Develop and implement curriculum plans for Key Stage 3 and 4, with a focus on preparing for Key Stage 5
  • Line manage members of staff within the department and provide coaching and mentoring to support their development
  • Develop and maintain relationships with specialist providers and stakeholders to ensure the department has access to up-to-date resources and expertise
  • Communicate effectively with families and students about curriculum and delivery of RSE
  • Contribute to the development of teaching, learning and assessment within the faculty
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of statutory guidance for RSE and Health Education
  • Contribute to the development of RS across the federation
  • Plan and deliver outstanding lessons within the department
  • Assess and evaluate the effectiveness of the department's curriculum and teaching practices
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve student outcomes and achievement
  • Support the positive behaviour of students across the faculty
  • Actively contribute to the teaching of RS across all age and ability ranges
  • Remain informed of current developments in the subject areas, to participate in INSET and to initiate change where appropriate
  • Consistently plan and deliver outstanding lessons, ensuring that a variety of teaching resources are utilised appropriately
  • Support and actively contribute to the Academy EDI strategy, taking oversight for this within the curriculum areas
  • Ensure that students' work is marked regularly and conscientiously, in accordance with the Academy feedback policy
  • Oversee, set and mark internal examinations and tests as required
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of a wide range of teaching methods and to implement these in the classroom
  • Be fully committed to the Academy's house and enrichment activities
  • Possess excellent ICT skills and use these as a core tool in the teaching of RS
  • Provide accurate information for parents, attend parents' evenings and other presentation meetings as required
