About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Physicist/Consultant to join our Reactor and Radiation Physics Team at Jacobs Birchwood office in Cheshire.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out independent nuclear safety and technical assessment of nuclear submarine propulsion plant, and supporting criticality and shielding safety case development in the civil nuclear sector and other safety-critical infrastructure.

As a Senior Physicist/Consultant, you will provide key physics support to both defence and civil nuclear sectors, and play a vital role in existing and new defence and civil nuclear programmes in the UK.

You will be part of the Assurance, Technology and Regulation (AT&R) performance unit, which has been providing critical services to the nuclear industry for over 60 years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assessment of safety cases.
  • Assessment of design technical cases.
  • Providing formal independent nuclear safety and technical assessment of documents relating to the Physics aspects of nuclear propulsion and delivering the assessment output in formal letters.
  • Performing assurance activities (Physics trails and testing).
  • Contributing to Research projects in reactor physics and associated technologies.
  • Representing Jacobs at safety and technical meetings with clients, the plant authorisee, designers and safety case authors.
  • Applying your personal skills and experience to other projects being carried out by Jacobs, including shielding and criticality assessments for clients in the civil nuclear industry.

A strong background in nuclear physics and a proven track record of delivering high-quality technical assessments and assurance activities.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, colleagues and other stakeholders.

A collaborative and flexible approach, with a willingness to contribute to a dynamic and supportive team environment.
