Job Opportunity: Overhead Lines Advanced Apprentice - Projects - South Wales

We are National Grid Electricity Distribution, serving communities of over 8 million people. Our expert teams deliver heat, light and power for homes and businesses, working outdoors with underground cables, overhead lines and substations that operate between 230 and 132,000 volts.

To achieve net-zero targets and increase our positive impact, we're looking for apprentices to join us. Our teams work across multiple disciplines to keep the lights on for our customers, maintaining a 24/7 service from faults and maintenance to new connections.

The apprenticeship programme takes approximately three years to complete, with a City & Guilds Level 2 Qualification in Electrical Engineering. You'll develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours to become a Power Networks Craftsperson, spending your first 12 weeks being inducted onto the programme at one of our Training Centres.

As an Overhead Linesperson, you'll work at height constructing, maintaining, testing, repairing and replacing overhead lines and equipment. In the projects team, you'll work on distribution systems up to 132kV, participating in craft skills activities on the live LV network and dead circuits.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Constructing and altering overhead lines, installing pole mounted plant, running and terminating cables
  • Carrying out routine inspection, maintenance and repairs of overhead equipment
  • Recording asset routes, details and positions
  • Locating and identifying cables, testing insulation, phasing and continuity on LV cables
  • Testing earthing, voltage, phasing and phase rotation
  • Writing outage requests and switching programmes for simple outages
