Job Overview

The Ministry of Justice seeks a Faith and Pastoral Care Specialist to provide faith/belief and pastoral care to prisoners and staff of their own faith/belief tradition. This role requires strong knowledge of Islamic Studies, proficiency in Tajweed, and the ability to facilitate practice of different schools of thought within Islam.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide guidance on Islamic practices, offering advice, pastoral care, and spiritual welfare to prisoners, staff, and their families.
  2. Foster opportunities for worship, meditation, study, and religious programs, working collaboratively with other chaplains, volunteers, and external groups.
  3. Contribute to developing local policy, procedures, and practice related to faith/belief support.
  4. Offer crisis intervention and support to prisoners, helping to resolve challenging situations.
  5. Maintain awareness of relevant faith/belief events and coordinate support for these occasions.
  6. Participate in training programs and materials for staff and volunteers, contributing to Faith Awareness Training.
  7. Establish connections with local faith/belief communities and other agencies, exploring ways to support prisoners upon release.
  8. Collaborate in improving performance, undertaking data analysis, and ensuring all relevant administration is complete.
Requirements
  • Hold a recognized qualification in Islamic Studies at graduate level or higher.
  • Be proficient in Tajweed (correct pronunciation of Arabic).
  • Have demonstrable knowledge of different schools of thought and denominations within Islam.
  • Obtain formal endorsement by the candidate's faith community through HMPPS Muslim Faith and Belief Adviser.
Working Arrangements

This role involves regular unsocial hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and Bank/Public Holidays. The Ministry of Justice offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows.
