About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled individual to join our team as the Genomic Medicine Service Alliance Director. This is a key leadership position that will play a crucial role in driving forward research and innovation across the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliance region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Aligning to the NHS Genomics Strategy, setting strategic direction of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliance along with Senior Leadership Team, including supporting delivery of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliance business plan.
  • Driving forward research and innovation across the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliance region working with a range of stakeholders and partners.
  • Working closely with the East Genomics Laboratory on an aligned research and innovation strategy for the East Genomics region.
  • Working with the Genomics Innovation Directors across each NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliance, as well as NHS England and key stakeholders, to align research and innovation activity and to develop a national plan of action.
  • Coordinating and driving the NHS Genomic Networks of Excellence that the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliance is engaged with, including working closely with the leadership of the NHS Genomic Networks of Excellence and other key opinion leaders in the national and international genomic ecosystem.
  • Supporting the development of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Research Collaborative.
  • Advising and reporting at a senior level on NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliance research and innovation activity including at the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Research Collaborative, the East Genomics Executive Board and the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliance Partnership Board.
  • Assessing the viability and impact of innovations on the Genomic Medicine Service's priorities, such as health inequalities.
  • Coordinating the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliance input into life sciences initiatives, including the Genomics England spending review initiatives, such as the Generation Study, Cancer 2.0 and Diverse Data programmes.
  • Driving the NHS Genomic Medicine Service support for and recruitment to clinical trials, including understanding the active clinical trials with a genomic need within the region and nationally understanding the capacity and capabilities within the region and nationally to support clinical trials facilitate access and identifying relevant patient cohorts for clinical trial enrolment supporting the establishment of genomic enabled clinical trials with research partners.
  • Ensuring that all staff managed by the postholder undertake individual performance appraisal, operate within the appropriate Human Resource policies, take up appropriate and required training plans, and contribute to workforce.
Person Specification
  • A recognised national/international profile in leading and coordinating research and innovation projects and in contributing to national and international initiatives in genomic science/medicine.
  • An understanding and experience of the UK research funding landscape including experience of working with partners such as the National Institute of Healthcare Research (NIHR), industry and academia.
Requirements
  • Educated to PhD level or equivalent level or above and experience of working in a leadership position in a specialist area.
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development.
Skills
  • Demonstrable ability to act upon incomplete information, using experience gained to make inferences and decision making.
  • Demonstrable leadership, vision, strategic thinking and planning with highly developed political skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide informative reporting on impact to Board management.
