About the Role

Sainsbury's is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Kafka team. As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for leading and coaching a talented team of engineers, driving the delivery of impactful solutions that drive efficiency and enhance performance across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and enable the delivery of solutions that create value, drive efficiency, and increase performance for the business.
  • Line manage and guide a multi-skilled engineering team, ensuring they have the necessary resources and skills to support and maintain in-house built Kafka platforms, as well as the administration of Confluent Cloud.
  • Mentor and coach team members, recruit diverse and talented individuals, and promote a culture of collaboration, learning, and respect.
  • Work closely with Product Managers and Engineers to define the vision and technical direction of the products, manage multiple deliveries, and take end-to-end ownership of products, including change management and service management.
  • Drive the development of new features, promote best engineering practices, and advocate for Agile/Lean delivery methodologies.
  • Manage initiative-level budgets, ensure adherence to processes and standards, and demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviors that contribute to a culture of excellence and inclusivity.

  • A passionate and experienced leader with a deep understanding of engineering practices and a talent for coaching and developing teams.
  • A hands-on approach, leading by example and inspiring colleagues, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Technical expertise and previous experience with Kafka, combined with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deliveries, enabling the successful development and delivery of large-scale platforms.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, building strong relationships at all levels and contributing to an inclusive and diverse culture that Sainsbury's Tech values.
