We are seeking a highly skilled Biomedical Scientist to join our team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. As a Biomedical Scientist, you will play a vital role in providing a comprehensive 7-day service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology, parasitology, and molecular testing.

The successful applicant will be required to work shifts on a 24/7 rota system, which includes weekend and bank holiday working, as well as early/day/late/night shifts. You will rotate across various sections of the laboratory and be responsible for analysing specimens for screening, diagnostic purposes, and the clinical management of patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To interpret clinical request forms and exercise judgement regarding work to be performed and priority relating to clinical urgency.
  • To handle a range of body fluids, tissue samples, and other infectious material according to category II containment procedures.
  • To handle chemicals according to COSHH regulations.
  • To handle radioactive materials according to IRMA regulations.
  • To deal with spillage of samples/chemicals in a safe and appropriate manner when necessary.
  • To use laboratory equipment safely in accordance with local and manufacturers guidelines.

Requirements:

  • IBMS accredited BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology or Virology (from 2005) or working towards this qualification.
  • Professional registration with HCPC.
  • You must be able to plan and use your own time economically and effectively.
  • Good communicator.
