Biomedical Scientist

The East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled Biomedical Scientist to join its Haematology/Transfusion Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a comprehensive blood science service, including the analysis of blood samples and the interpretation of results.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biomedical science, with experience in NHS Haematology/Transfusion laboratories. They will be required to work independently, with minimal supervision, and will be responsible for maintaining accurate records and ensuring the quality of results.
The department is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including Advia 2120 analysers and IL TOPS 550s. The successful candidate will be required to operate and maintain this equipment, as well as troubleshoot any technical issues that may arise.
The role will involve working closely with clinical and blood science staff to ensure that diagnostically abnormal results are acted upon promptly. The successful candidate will also be required to participate in departmental audit and internal/external quality assurance programs.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Providing a rapid, reliable, and efficient service by performing a comprehensive range of routine and specialized analyses.
- Performing investigations and analytical techniques unsupervised, while organizing own work tasks, normally under the direction of a Section Leader.
- Rotating through all sections of the department, including specimen reception.
- Applying approved Standard Operating Procedures used in the Department.
- Assisting in the development of Standard Operating Procedures, and recommending improvements and amendments as necessary.
- Performing complex manual and automated analytical investigations requiring specialist skills.
- Operating complex, high-value analytical equipment without supervision.
- Maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing faults in complex laboratory instruments, ensuring essential services are maintained in the event of technical failure.
- Preparing reagents, control materials, and calibrators with a high degree of accuracy and precision.
- Working with hazardous and noxious chemicals, and with frequent exposure to uncontained body substances.
- Checking the reliability of results to ensure accuracy and precision by applying quality assurance statistical criteria.
- Interpreting results requiring subjective judgment and analytical expertise.
- Recognizing grossly abnormal and life-threatening results.
- Validating and reporting test results in a timely fashion so that they may be acted on as necessary by clinicians.
- Providing technical interpretation and comment on the validity of results.
- Maintaining accurate and detailed records of patient results, quality control data, and calculations.
- Participating in departmental audit and internal/external quality assurance programs.
- Working with laboratory and Trust information systems.
- Maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing faults with laboratory point-of-care equipment in clinical areas and liaising with service engineers and ward staff as required.
- Supervising MLA and Trainee BMS staff.
- Assisting in the department's stock control procedures.
- Adhering to the departmental Quality Management Systems.
- Performing general clerical and administrative tasks.
- Selecting, matching, and timely issuing of correct blood products in response to medical prescription.
- Maintaining adequate supplies of all blood products, liaising with Blood Transfusion Service and other outside agencies.
- Maintaining an accurate audit trail of the fate of all blood products.
- Ensuring that blood products are stored in compliance with National Guidelines.
