Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Optical Engineer to join our Azure Fiber team in Romsey. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing novel optical fiber fabrication technologies, including glass preform manufacture, optical fiber drawing, and associated processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and lead experiments to perform accelerated failure analysis of optical fibers
  • Root cause analysis of defects and failure modes in optical fiber coatings
  • Drive team to ensure yield and continuous improvements in mass production, prioritizing manufacturing focus through process control tools and analysis of measurement data
  • Lead activities between Engineering and Operations groups to manage materials supply and quality of incoming material
  • Lead fibre coating development projects, transferring processes from prototype phase to production phase
  • Develop and manage documentation in support of process technology, operating procedures, and process control requirements
  • Manage projects to identify novel and improved manufacturing methods, contributing to the development of next-generation production methods
Requirements
  • Technical engineering experience or relevant degree in Chemistry, Materials Photonics, Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • Relevant experience in developing and documenting optical fiber coating processes
  • Relevant experience in inline and offline optical fiber coating characterization
  • Proven experience in polymer coating process engineering for optical fiber
  • Implementation of statistical process control methods and their application to improve yield and reduce waste
  • Practical knowledge of optical fibers and their properties
  • Use of lean problem-solving and continuous improvement methodologies and practices
  • Demonstrated ability in innovative development and practical application
  • Experience in root cause analysis for fiber coating defects and failure modes
  • Knowledge of cleanroom working environment and disciplines
  • Capability to arrange and analyze data to identify trends and correlations
  • Knowledge of full product lifecycle from concept through to production
