About the Role

We are seeking an experienced IoT Network Engineer to join our team at Octopus Energy. As a key member of our technology team, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the remote wired and wireless network connectivity for our IoT Gateways.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement network architecture for IoT Gateways, including identifying international operating variants.
  • Inherit and standardize existing network estate, including configurations, hardware firmware updates, monitoring strategies, and failover/failback testing.
  • Support cloud infrastructure teams with troubleshooting Gateway connectivity issues, identify root causes, and implement solutions.
  • Ensure network security and compliance meets industry best practices, international regulations, and company policies.
  • Document and maintain network architecture designs, IP address schemas, VLANs details, and other relevant information.
  • Monitor network performance, data usage, and proactively identify potential issues.
  • Recommend and implement network upgrades, enhancements, and procurement of new technologies.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering teams on networking strategies and attend customer meetings to support site-specific requirements.
  • Support telecoms and networking procurement/manufacturing.
Requirements
  • Commercial experience working with remote IoT/edge network hardware, architecture design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of network protocols and technologies, including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, and VPNs.
  • Experience with network security technologies and best practices, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention, and access control.
  • Flexible, problem-solving mindset, excellent communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • A full driving license and willingness to travel throughout the UK to customer sites in urban and rural locations.
  • European or international travel may be available at your choice.
Desirable Skills
  • Experience in the energy industry or industrial control, possibly as a field engineer, familiar with risk assessment/method statements/out-of-office work practices.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring and management tools, such as Wireshark, SNMP, and Cisco Prime.
  • Relevant certifications, such as CCNP, CCIE, or CISSP.
  • Experience of virtual networking within AWS, configuring VPCs and site-to-site VPNs.
  • Worked in the IoT domain or industrial control networks.
