About the Year in Industry Placement

This placement is designed for university students undertaking a 12-month placement, who will join our Blast Damage Assessment Team within the Systems Assessment Group.

As a member of this multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists, you will provide operational effectiveness and weapons effects assessments to AWE and our government stakeholders. You will have the opportunity to explore and apply codified structural design practices for major construction material disciplines, research the response of structures under extreme dynamic loads, work with computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis methods, and develop skills in programming, operational analysis, and probabilistic assessment.

During the programme, you will focus mainly on one or two projects, gaining a deeper insight into the work that is done. You will be supported by a line manager and a mentor, who will help you to navigate your time with us and support you in developing the skills to build your career within the defence industry.

Your on-programme learning will combine a corporate induction to help you find your feet, on-the-job training, and some classroom-based or online learning depending on your role.

Alongside this, your off-programme learning will include being part of an undergraduate group project team focusing on a business deliverable. We will give you every opportunity to network with other undergraduates, as well as the graduate community, so you can start building your business contacts at AWE.

At the end of the programme, you will have increased your knowledge and understanding within your subject area – and gained additional skills to help you in your future career.

The Skills and Qualifications Required

Candidates will be studying for a degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Blast Engineering or Architectural Engineering.
