About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our Pathology Reception team as a Pathology Support Worker - Clinical Operations. This is a full-time position that requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receiving, sorting, and processing clinical samples, identifying and resolving problems such as leaking samples, labeling errors, and missing information.
  • Performing accurate data input on computers for prolonged periods of time, including patient information and investigations requested by hospital clinical staff and GPs.
  • Maintaining attention to accuracy at all times during data input and labeling of samples.
  • Following standard operating procedures (SOP) at all times.
  • Understanding analytical work that is going to be undertaken.
Diagnostic and Interpretive Responsibilities
  • Understanding the urgency of requests; prioritizing work according to SOPs.
  • Judging whether samples are suitable for testing and taking appropriate action.
  • Ensuring system for phoning results is adhered to.
  • Answering calls on the Pathology enquiry line on a rota basis, giving results, information, and advice within their competency.
  • Taking significant numbers of requests for supplementary tests, finding the appropriate sample, and ordering the test(s), contacting the requestor about any issues this may cause.
Supervisory and Management Responsibilities
  • Undertaking training as an appraisee and participating in annual and six-monthly review.
  • Participating in overtime arrangements when assessed as competent to do so.
  • Booking leave in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Reporting personal absence to a senior member of staff, according to trust policy.
  • Being aware of and understanding trust policies for grievance, discipline, and capability.
Communication and Liaison Responsibilities
  • Maintaining awareness of changes and developments in the section and other departments within Pathology.
  • Acting as the first point of contact for all of Pathology, dealing with a wide range of enquiries maintaining confidentiality. This includes communication with outside sources with information of a sensitive nature either in person or over the telephone.
  • Informing appropriate staff that people have arrived.
  • Participating in the staff questionnaire. Feeding comments up through the management system.
  • Communicating with patients and staff on appointments, specimen collections, procedures for samples pre-analysis, etc.
  • Ensuring that results are not given inappropriately to patients, explaining why when necessary.
  • Ensuring that external visitors complete visitor logs and issue badges as appropriate.
  • Issuing results in accordance with departmental SOPs.
  • Collating, enveloping, and dispatching pathology reports.
  • Co-operating with other staff within the Pathology department in order that resources are used to maximum benefit.
  • Attending meetings as directed.
Education and Training Responsibilities
  • Supporting competency training for junior staff in co-operation with the section trainers.
  • Being responsible for own personal development.
  • Attending all courses as directed.
  • Attending all mandatory and statutory training courses as directed.
Information Management and Technology Responsibilities
  • Working within standard operating procedures and policies to ensure high-quality data, thus maintaining the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases. Recognizing data quality problems and bringing to the attention of senior staff.
  • Attending training on the use of display screen equipment and ensuring that working practices comply.
  • Reporting any non-functional hardware to senior staff.
  • Using the laboratory information management system according to authorized protocols.
  • Using quality management system for read-only access.
  • Complying with local and national policies for the safe, secure, and confidential processing and storage of patient and other laboratory information.
Financial and Resource Management Responsibilities
  • Using resources efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Signing for deliveries and informing stores staff of large deliveries.
  • Reporting low levels of supplies appropriately to ensure continuing supply.
  • Ensuring that stocks are stored appropriately.
  • Using equipment safely, taking into account its complexity, limitations, and value.
Clinical Audit and Quality Management Responsibilities
  • Assisting with data collection for audits as directed.
  • Being aware of all types of documentation within the laboratory organization.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
  • Working within all health and safety policies in a safe manner, recognizing hazards within the workplace and applying agreed precautionary measures.
  • Being mindful of duties towards colleagues, visitors, and patients in maintaining a safe environment and safe working practices. Reporting any defects noticed.
  • Applying knowledge from training in display screen equipment, personal protective equipment, and manual handling to own work practices.
  • Applying knowledge from fire safety training to ensure safety for self and others. Complying with all fire procedures as directed.
  • Understanding the implications of COSHH and risk assessment documentation and working within defined control measures at all times.
  • Maintaining awareness of all emergency and major incident procedures, and acting accordingly in the event of an incident.
  • Understanding and adhering to trust policies for clinical waste disposal.
  • Understanding the reporting system for clinical incident reporting and using it appropriately.
