Pensions Correspondent

London, Greater London, United Kingdom The Financial Times Full time

The Role

We are seeking a skilled journalist to cover the global pensions industry from our London office. This exciting opportunity involves getting under the skin of the world's largest investment institutions at a time of significant change.

Pension funds are facing a subdued outlook for investment returns, and as average life expectancy increases, pensions have become a defining political issue across the world. We are looking for stories on how global pension funds are investing their money, how they interact with policymakers, and how they are responding to changing demographics.

From the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan in Canada to the Australian Superannuation funds and the large US public pension plans like Calpers and Calstrs, you will be able to get under the skin of the key players. The UK's own pension fund industry is still reeling from the fallout from the mini-Budget, while reforms are under way to improve investment returns and better support the country's stock market.

Your Skills

We are looking for an energetic and resourceful individual and a proven all-rounder who is keen to make their mark reporting on this dynamic industry that touches upon investment management, public policy, and the corporate world.

You will be able to write-up breaking news quickly, and will also be hungry to develop sources, generate splash-worthy scoops, and craft insightful news-in-depth pieces. You must be confident in gathering off-diary news leads and spotting trends, and able to turn the pension fund industry into stories that bring it alive and grab the non-specialist reader.

The position is in Harriet Agnew's asset management team but also involves working closely with the companies and markets desks, corporate reporters, parly, and colleagues in the US and Asia.

Benefits

Our benefits vary depending on location, but we are committed to providing best-in-class perks across all our offices as well as an inclusive environment to develop your career. Examples of our benefits include; generous annual leave allowances, flexible working (including working from home), medical cover, enhanced maternity & paternity packages, subsidised gym memberships, and Giving Back opportunities. Full details of our benefits can be found.

How We Work

Our hybrid setup means staff are expected to come into the office 3 days a week. Our office is located across the street from St. Paul's Cathedral and is easily accessible from all corners of London. There are the main train terminals such as Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Blackfriars, City Thameslink, or Waterloo all situated within walking distance or there are several tube stations within a few minutes' walk such as Mansion House, St. Paul's, Bank, or Barbican.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

The FT is committed to providing an inclusive working environment for all. We are an equal opportunities employer who seeks to recruit and appoint the best talent regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion, and/or belief. We believe that a supportive workplace is one where employees feel they can be themselves at work and have the flexibility they need to meet their personal needs.

Please let us know if you require any adjustments as part of the application process or to enable you to attend an interview. If you would like to discuss your requirements, or have any questions, please contact and a member of our team will be happy to help.
