Spatial Planner

At National Highways, we are seeking a skilled Spatial Planner to play a key role in the planning system. This individual will take a proactive approach to ensure that new developments are well located and planned for, and the travel demands they create are managed and sustainable for the strategic road network.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Local Planning Authorities and stakeholders to develop local plans and strategic growth plans.
- Discharge statutory responsibilities within the planning process, including commissioning specialist consultant support when necessary.
- Evaluate the potential impact and implications of complex planning applications on the Strategic Road Network to ensure a measured, robust, and informed response.
- Manage ongoing liaison with external stakeholders, providing evidence-based guidance and advice on future local plans and sharing information on Highways England's emerging strategies.
- Represent the Region at public examinations, appeals, and public inquiries, working closely with internal and external partners to identify and secure funding opportunities for network improvements.
Requirements
- Demonstrable experience and understanding of spatial planning and associated legislation, including development management.
- Proven practical understanding of infrastructure development programmes and prioritization of needs to develop, manage, and maintain a safe and efficient world-class asset.
- Qualified Town Planner or Transport Planner, or equivalent professional experience, with Chartership or willingness to work towards desirable.
- Experience working with local planning and highway authorities, local enterprise partnerships, and a wide range of external stakeholders.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, both internally and externally.
