Main Responsibilities

The role of Palliative Medicine Specialist at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust involves providing consultant-led specialist palliative and end-of-life care services within the acute hospital setting. This includes providing advice, support, and education to hospital staff, as well as developing close working relationships with clinical teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide consultant care, advice, and support across the acute hospital care settings.
  • Develop and implement palliative care services, including hospital inpatient reviews and outpatient reviews.
  • Contribute to medical audit, service improvement, and integration initiatives.
  • Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • Expertise in full range of Palliative Medicine conditions.
  • Ability to lead a multi-professional team and take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Ability to undertake palliative care assessments in a variety of settings.
  • Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT/CESR or within 6 months of obtaining CCT/CESR.

Teaching and Research

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to teaching and research initiatives, including:

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience of research and ability to apply outcomes to clinical practice.

Leadership and Management

This role requires strong leadership and management skills, including:

  • Demonstrable multi-disciplinary team leadership skills.
  • Evidence of leadership skills training.
  • Experience of effective management.
