Position Overview

We are seeking a proactive and innovative Consultant in Ophthalmology, specializing in Vitreo Retinal Surgery, to enhance our dedicated team of healthcare professionals. North Cumbria is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and is an ideal location for those who appreciate a blend of rural charm and modern amenities.

Key Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will be instrumental in advancing ophthalmic practices, focusing on integrating acute hospital services with community and primary care. This role presents a unique opportunity to contribute to a comprehensive approach in delivering safe and effective eye care.

The successful applicant will collaborate with a team of consultant ophthalmologists, each with specialized interests, providing general ophthalmic services to a diverse population of approximately 360,000, including referrals from adjacent regions.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Requirements:

  • FRCOphth or equivalent qualification
  • Full GMC registration
  • Certification of Completion of Training (CCT) or eligibility within six months of the interview
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register in Ophthalmology

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Post-CCT fellowship in a relevant subspecialty

Experience and Skills

Essential Skills:

  • Demonstrated high standards in clinical Ophthalmology
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance
  • Expertise in managing a range of clinical Ophthalmology issues, both emergency and elective
  • Ability to independently coordinate clinical care for patients

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in high-volume cataract surgery

Management and Administrative Skills

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to advise on the efficient operation of subspecialty services
  • Willingness to participate in on-call duties

Teaching and Development

Essential Skills:

  • Commitment to teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff
  • Ability to impart essential clinical and personal skills for Ophthalmic care
