Part Time Academic Mentor for High School Students

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to serve as a Part Time Gear Up Mentor for Carbon High School. The successful candidate will work under the general direction of the Utah State University Eastern (USU Eastern) GEAR UP Director to provide academic support and guidance to high school students and families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring and academic assistance to high school GEAR UP students and families.
  • Address the needs of diverse learners and serve as a positive role model.
  • Interact with students, families, faculty, and administration using discernment, follow-through, and decision-making.
  • Travel regularly to and from Carbon High School to serve high school students.
  • Participate in GEAR UP staff meetings, training, and activities.
  • Contribute to the development of a college-going culture at Carbon High School.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree or higher from a regionally-accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Valid Utah driver's license to perform essential job responsibilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and handle confidential information.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current or previous experience with the GEAR UP program.
  • Previous experience mentoring or working with high school and middle school students.
  • Knowledge of college/university admissions, financial aid/scholarship programs, and degree requirements.
Work Details
  • 15 hours per week (non-benefited).
  • 10 months, with no work during university/school holidays, school fall break, winter break, and spring break.
