Position Title: Senior Language Access Specialist at the Commonwealth of Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a Senior Language Access Specialist to enhance our team. In this role, your primary responsibility will be to eliminate language obstacles, ensuring that individuals with limited English proficiency can fully engage with the justice system during legal processes, maintaining fairness and equality with their English-speaking counterparts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing both simultaneous and consecutive interpretation during legal proceedings and offering language support in various legal contexts as required by the public with limited English proficiency.
  • Executing translations, including sight and written materials.
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues and sharing insights with contract interpreters as needed.
  • Maintaining accurate daily logs, reports, and documentation.
  • Participating in research and initiatives aimed at improving program services.
  • Assisting other program locations when necessary.
  • Carrying out additional assigned responsibilities.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Certification as a court interpreter through the Virginia Court Interpreter Certification program or an equivalent certification recognized by the Consortium for State Court Interpreter Certification.
  • Ability to be appointed by judicial officers within the program court.
  • Significant experience in court interpretation, with evidence of ongoing education in the field (translation skills are advantageous).
  • Preferably, prior experience in a staff interpreter capacity.
  • Strong computer proficiency.
  • Exceptional written communication skills in English.
  • Understanding of language nuances, legal frameworks, and cultural differences relevant to the involved countries.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Virginia's interpreting guidelines and professional conduct standards.

Additional Information:

This position may require occasional travel.
