Job Summary

The Director of Data Strategy and Governance will lead the development and execution of Harvard University's data strategy in partnership with executive leadership, data stewards, and other stakeholders. This position is responsible for nurturing and continuously developing a data-driven culture and activating a community of practice of data stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of an enterprise data strategy for Harvard University, and upon establishment of an enterprise data strategy, serve as the primary leader tracking progress towards its objectives.
  • Drive the identification, business case development, and socialization of strategic data initiatives.
  • Create data governance standards, policies, procedures, and best practices, and establish a mechanism to diffuse these practices across stakeholder groups.
  • Actively partner with the Information Security and Data Privacy (ISDP) team on data security and privacy efforts, including compliance with data privacy regulations.
  • Enable data stewards and other data stakeholders to implement tactical data quality improvement solutions.
  • Collaborate with OIRA staff to conduct research and analysis to inform data governance proposals and challenges.
  • Establish metrics to measure the effectiveness of data governance and other strategic data initiatives relative to the institution's priorities and data strategy.
  • Create a mechanism to monitor and report data governance effectiveness regularly to university leadership.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 8+ years of experience working as a data strategist and/or data governance leader.
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of data management and governance principles, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Experience leading large-scale organizational change efforts related to data governance.
  • Knowledge of data security, privacy, and compliance regulations and requirements.
  • Strong ability to develop a strategic vision, influence business and technology stakeholders to buy into the vision, and effectively execute the vision.
  • Senior leadership experience leading teams across data management and governance.
Work Environment

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location.
