Medical Clinical Fellow for Hospital at Night

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint senior clinical fellows to join our renal department. You will be part of a team providing both inpatient and outpatient care to patients with the full spectrum of kidney diseases and be able to participate in a full range of educational opportunities present within the department.
Main duties of the jobThe post offers an excellent opportunity to join a centre of excellence for Renal Medicine training. The appointee will join a team of Renal Medicine Specialist Registrars in the Renal Department of the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust. This is a tertiary referral, academic renal unit providing renal services to North Central London. The post offers excellent clinical experience in dialysis, transplantation, chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury (AKI).

- Have completed internal medicine training
- Are making the transition from core to specialist training and seeking to consolidate knowledge and experience
- Have not previously worked in the NHS and seek an introduction to renal medicine at higher specialty trainee level
- Completed specialist training and keen to gain additional experience of subspecialties in a world-renowned institution
The successful applicant will rotate through:
- Acute Kidney Unit
- Acute transplant recipients
- ITU stepdowns
- AKI transferred from other trusts in North Central London as part of the AKI Network
They will also attend a variety of clinics including:
- Dialysis (Haemodialysis and PD)
- Transplantation: acute and chronic clinics, transplant assessment clinic
- Low clearance
- General and sub-speciality nephrology e.g. vasculitis, lupus, nephrotic syndrome
- Opportunities to attend other clinics such as Tubular, Maternal nephrology, Difficult hypertension, HIV nephrology, Uronephrology
They will have the opportunity to perform native and transplant renal biopsies under consultant supervision and will be expected to participate in the registrar on call and night shift rota, for which they will be paid a supplement accordingly.
The appointee will have full access to the extensive academic and educational programmes that the department offers. The clinical department works in collaboration with the UCL Centre for Nephrology. Research opportunities are offered by several groups with established interests in renal tubular pathophysiology and stones, renal genetics, renal bone disease, cardiovascular disease, dialysis, autoimmunity and fibrosis.
Person SpecificationEducation & professional Qualifications- Possession of MBBS or equivalent qualification
- Eligibility to work in the UK by September 2024
- Possession of GMC registration and a licence to practice at the time of appointment and up to date fitness to practice by August 2024
- Full MRCP(UK) or equivalent
- Possession of a current ALS certification or equivalent
- Possession of a teaching qualification
- Demonstrable ability to meet the Trust Values
- Proficiency in a range of medical procedures
- Ability to insert temporary haemodialysis catheters independently
- Commitment to the specialty with evidence of previous experience in nephrology, dialysis and transplantation
- Sufficient knowledge base to act at specialist registrar level (ST3+) equivalent
- Experience in the training of junior medical staff, including the teaching of practical procedures
- Experience in performing native and transplant biopsies
- Previous HDU/ITU experience
- Ability to work as part of and lead a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to supervise, manage and lead junior medical staff
- Understanding of the principles of clinical governance, patient safety, clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives
- Understanding of research methodology and evidence-based practice
- Excellent oral and written communications skills in English
- Ability to treat others with compassion, dignity and respect, taking into account any diversity issues
- Ability to relate to and empathise with patients from a wide range of backgrounds
- Ability to be thorough and to organise and prioritise personal workload
- Demonstrates probity and has the capacity to take responsibility for own actions
- Demonstrates initiative and motivation
