Greater Manchester Police is seeking a highly skilled Forensic Ballistics Expert to join our team. As a key member of our National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS), you will play a critical role in supporting UK law enforcement agencies in reducing firearms criminality.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting ballistic examinations to identify intelligence opportunities, including comparison of ammunition and firearms to identify linked series. You will work closely with our team to ensure that all activities comply with NABIS Quality requirements in line with ISO17025 and the FSR Codes of Conduct and Practice.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct ballistic examinations to identify intelligence opportunities
  • Compare ammunition and firearms to identify linked series
  • Ensure compliance with NABIS Quality requirements and ISO17025
  • Support the strategic vision of NABIS
Requirements:
  • Extensive work experience with a leading forensic organisation or as an independent expert consultant
  • Educated to degree level in a research-based subject area
  • Completed a recognised 'Expert witness course' in firearms and have court experience
  • Extensive working knowledge and experience of working with firearms and ammunition
  • Experienced and trained in the use of IBIS technologies or similar systems
  • Experience of safe handling of firearms and disassembly and reloading of ammunition
  • Proven experience of working effectively in a laboratory environment
  • The ability to manage an independent case load and ensure that casework is delivered within demanding service level agreement timescales
  • Experience of assisting and supporting on the job training of staff as required
Desirable Requirements:
  • Extensive knowledge of firearms history and manufacturing processes
  • Good knowledge of health and safety legislation
  • Experience of working in a quality management environment, in particular ISO17025
