Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Child and Adolescent Mental Health Specialist to join our team at Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a systematic, specialist assessment, consultation, and evidence-based treatment service to children, their families, or their professional carers, referred to our CAMHS team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage own caseload from referral to discharge, holding medium to high-risk cases working autonomously the majority of the time using highly developed specialist expertise.
  • Provide reports and maintain written records of assessments, clinical interventions, and consultation meetings.
  • Work within the guidelines of Clinical Governance and employing AWP Trust policies.
  • Work to a job plan and participate in Choice and Partnership Approach (CAPA) in the delivery of Tier 3 CAMHS.
  • Carry out specialist urgent assessments of a young person's mental health needs and associated risk when required, including deliberate self-harm assessments.
  • Work with children, young people, and their families, promoting opportunities for their maximum engagement and involvement in formulations or care plans and evaluation of the service they receive.
  • Be accountable for professional actions without direct supervision and lead and participate in joint complex assessments with other disciplines and agencies.
  • Assess child safeguarding issues for each case and practice within local safeguarding guidelines, sharing and directly referring on concerns when appropriate and participating in multi-agency safeguarding conferences.
  • Ensure throughput of clients and create regular assessment slots in work schedules.
  • Liaise closely with our partnership agencies of Education, Social Services, and the Voluntary Sector to facilitate proper coordination and development of services for children/young people with emotional, behavioral, and mental health problems.
  • Liaise with other disciplines and agencies to ensure the best practice is shared.
  • Be prepared to travel to other sites and clinics, to schools, and to the child's home.
  • Remain updated on local working together arrangements (e.g., children in need/Child Protection procedures).
  • Participate in suitable clinical supervision (as provided) and ensure that time is available to undertake this effectively.
  • Develop, support, and participate in audit as requested.
  • Explore, research, and develop further innovative ways to promote positive mental health in children and young people.

Person Specification:

  • Professional qualification leading to registration with a professional body (e.g., Mental Health Nursing, Family Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Child Psychotherapy, or other professional qualification with evidence of robust community CAMH experience and the use of CAPA approach to clinical assessment and intervention).
  • 2 years post-qualifying experience in mental health nursing or equivalent.
  • Additionally, if not incorporated into the professional qualification, a therapeutic qualification for work with children, adolescents, and their families to Masters Level or equivalent is required.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Evidence of post-qualification training and development.
  • Experience of clinical supervision.
