Job Title: Specialist in Children's Eye Care

We are seeking an experienced and skilled specialist in children's eye care to join our team. As a key member of the Paediatric Eye Service, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality care to children across South Birmingham.

About the Role

This is a Band 7 part-time position that requires a highly motivated and experienced Orthoptist to work with a culturally and socially diverse population. You will be part of a small team of Orthoptists, an Optometrist, and a Team Administrator who work together to provide comprehensive eye care services to children in mainstream schools, special schools, Child Development Centers, Health Centre clinical sessions, meetings, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Organise your own personal diary to cover the service to various locations, including schools, health centers, and community clinics.
  • Develop effective relationships with school nurses, SENCOs, DSLs, Community Paediatricians, and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of squints pre-operatively, discuss surgical management options, post-operative risks, and prognosis prior to referral to a Consultant Ophthalmologist.
  • Maintain adherence to Trust policies and National guidance at all times.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must possess:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Orthoptics or a related field.
  • Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Significant paediatric experience, including clinical assessment of children of all ages with or without special needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and carers, as well as colleagues and other healthcare professionals.
