Job Summary

The Deputy Director Data Protection Officer is a critical role within the Security and Data Protection Directorate of the Department for Work and Pensions. As a senior leader, you will be responsible for advising the Executive Team and Permanent Secretary on data protection risk and compliance, ensuring that the Department's future strategy is legally compliant and protects the privacy of customers and employees.

You will lead a team of Information Rights specialists, providing guidance on data protection issues, monitoring compliance, and conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments. Effective communication and stakeholder management skills are essential for this role, as you will need to build relationships with senior stakeholders and the Information Commissioner's Office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advice on the Department's obligations under the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Monitor the Department's compliance with data protection obligations and raise issues, risks, and concerns.
  • Act as the first point of contact for Data Protection matters for customers and employees.
  • Provide guidance on Freedom of Information requests and oversee the Department's overall FOI performance.
  • Be the point of contact between the Department and the Information Commissioner's Office.
  • Lead a team of Information Rights specialists, including the Departmental Information Management Team.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Hold a recognised Data Protection qualification.
  • Experience of operating within a data protection profession in an organisation processing significant personal data.
  • A proven track record of delivering timely quality outcomes and leading a team.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and influencing skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • A recognised Freedom of Information (FOI) qualification.
  • A law degree or professional legal qualification.
  • A postgraduate qualification in Information Rights.
