Job Overview

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is seeking an experienced Critical Care Medicine Specialist to join their team. The ideal candidate will have completed Stage 2 training in Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent and possess a strong passion for delivering high-quality care in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work in a busy tertiary referral ICU, providing clinical and leadership expertise to the Critical Care team. Key responsibilities include assessing, resuscitating, and stabilizing critically ill patients, as well as participating in cardiac arrest teams and managing junior colleagues out of hours.

Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates must have a strong background in Critical Care Medicine, excellent clinical judgment, and a willingness to develop their skills and knowledge in a collaborative environment. Desireable skills include experience with advanced airway management, invasive line placement, and audit and governance processes.

What We Offer

As a member of the UHBW Critical Care team, the successful candidate will receive comprehensive training and mentorship, as well as opportunities to develop projects and skills in areas such as Critical Care Echocardiography, ECMO, and Severe Acute Respiratory Failure. Funding may be available for qualifications in research, education, management, or other areas.

Knowledge

Essential
  • Previous experience in Critical Care Medicine
  • Able to assess, resuscitate and stabilise acutely sick patients
  • Experience of managing junior colleagues when working out of hours
  • Able to participate as key member of cardiac arrest team
  • Demonstrates good clinical judgement
  • Understands audit and governance processes
Desirable
  • Completed specialist skills courses (e.g. difficult airways, ATLS/APLS, ultrasound course, etc)
  • Designed and / or completed audits

  • Advanced airway skills including ability to intubate critically ill patients with distant supervision
  • Ability to site invasive lines (e.g. arterial, central venous, vascath) with distant supervision
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload

Qualifications

Essential
  • Registered with General Medical Council (UK) with a License to Practice
  • Completed Stage 2 training in ICM or equivalent
  • Advanced Life Support provider
Desirable
  • Possession of CCT in ICM or equivalent
  • FFICM/FRCA/MRCP/MRCS or equivalent
  • Other membership, fellowship or diplomas
  • Previous experience of working in critical care in the British Healthcare system (not observing)
