Bertelsmann's Quadrille is a leading publisher of high-quality illustrated books, with a strong reputation for innovation and excellence. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Design Manager to join our team on a 12-month Fixed Term basis to cover a period of parental leave.

About the Job

In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for supporting the work of the Design Manager, managing the staff and workloads of the Design team, and overseeing the Design work, working with both in-house and freelance designers and illustrators. You will also assemble creative teams for photoshoots, establish and maintain good relationships with authors, and communicate design concepts effectively.

You will be expected to ensure a continuously high standard of design across the entire list, working to keep Bertelsmann's Quadrille at the forefront of book design. You will also establish and oversee the vision and creative direction of each book, bearing in mind the readership, market, and design positioning.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the staff and workloads of the Design team, ensuring that all projects are completed to a high standard and on time.
  • Oversee the Design work, working with both in-house and freelance designers and illustrators, ensuring adherence to critical paths.
  • Assemble creative teams for photoshoots (photographers, stylists, etc) and art-directing the shoots where necessary.
  • Establish and maintain good relationships with authors, communicating design concepts effectively.
  • Ensure a continuously high standard of design across the entire list, working to keep Bertelsmann's Quadrille at the forefront of book design.
  • Establish and oversee the vision and creative direction of each book, bearing in mind the readership, market, and design positioning.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A strong portfolio of design work, showcasing expertise in book cover design and project management.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with authors, designers, and other stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced design environment, with a strong focus on meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality results.
Salary and Benefits

The salary for this role is circa £40,000, plus bonus and benefits. While our offices across the UK are places to connect, collaborate, and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility around where you work is just as important. For this role, we expect that you will attend the office at least 2 days a week, and we will discuss this through the recruitment process.
