Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Data Journalist to join our award-winning Visual and Data Journalism team at the Financial Times group. As a Data Journalist, you will be responsible for applying data engineering and data science methods to news automation, including sourcing and analyzing the data underpinning some of our highest-profile projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement data-driven investigations and projects that require building and maintaining automated pipelines for acquiring, cleaning, and analyzing continuously-updating data.
  • Collaborate with data journalists, graphics journalists, and front-end developers in the wider Visual & Data Journalism team, as well as reporters and editors from all parts of the FT newsroom who need support applying computational methods to their work.
  • Develop and maintain statistical models based on data, and apply data analysis in economic, business, or financial journalism.
  • Work with automation processes that use machine learning techniques, such as natural language generation tools, text analysis, or document classification algorithms.
  • Use machine learning or large language models in a journalism context, and write data documentation for non-technical users.
  • Train and support others in data handling techniques, and collaborate with data providers, subject specialists, journalists, designers, and developers to deliver data-driven stories and data visualizations for a non-specialist audience.
Requirements
  • Experience using data journalism or data science techniques to find and tell news stories.
  • Confidence using R or Python for data sourcing (including web scraping), cleaning, and analysis.
  • Knowledge of working collaboratively with others on coding projects using version control systems such as Git.
  • Strong communication skills, particularly the ability to explain your quantitative analysis work simply to non-specialist audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Training in statistics, data science, or quantitative social science methods.
  • Experience building, maintaining, or working with processes for continuously acquiring and processing data.
  • Developing data visualizations using D3, React, or Flourish.
  • Working with machine learning or large language models in a journalism context.
  • Writing data documentation for non-technical users.
  • Training and supporting others in data handling techniques.
