SEMH Teaching Assistant Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join our team at Long-term Teachers Ltd. As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in a secondary school setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide individualized support to students with SEMH needs, promoting their emotional wellbeing and encouraging positive behavior and social interactions.
  • Assist teaching staff in implementing EHCPs and support strategies, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Help students manage their emotions and behavior using de-escalation techniques, promoting resilience and academic engagement.
  • Monitor student progress and report back to the SENCO and teaching staff, contributing to the development of effective support plans.
Requirements:
  • Experience working with young people with SEMH or other special educational needs in a school, youth work, or care setting.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.
  • A calm, patient, and nurturing approach to supporting young people, with the ability to manage challenging behavior in a constructive and non-confrontational way.
