Head of Mechanical Engineering Innovation

Fortescue Zero is a rapidly expanding company that offers exciting opportunities for engineers to lead the Mechanical Engineering Group.
As Head of Mechanical Engineering Innovation, you will be responsible for delivering design, development, and technical sign-off of components and systems to meet customer and project targets. This includes leading the Mechanical Engineering Group to deliver the design, development, and technical sign-off of components and systems to meet customers and project targets.
The role requires technical authority over mechanical architectures, systems, and components. Development includes mechanical validation planning and responsibility up to system and product-breakdown level. You will also govern the mechanical R&D technology development for future application, including engaging with academic and professional institutions and supplier base.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading supply of capacity and capability to meet business engineering demand, including recruitment, contracting, and outsourcing function capability.
- Allocating Engineering resource to deliver above through project teams in business units.
- Developing the framework and methodologies to deliver the career and capability development of the Mechanical Engineering Group, including onboarding, early careers, talent identification, etc.
- Managing the Mechanical Engineering Group Learning and Development budget in support of capability and career development.
You will also lead and manage the outsourcing of work packages where capacity vs capability requires ensuring delivery of projects. Approving the process, system, and way of working in Mechanical Engineering, including efficiency measurement, is another key aspect of the role.
In addition to these responsibilities, you will set and approve the Mechanical Engineering Group strategy in terms of objectives, growth plan, organisational structure, delivery, task tracking. Joint ownership of Product roadmap, to join market pull from business units, manufacturing strategy from organisation, and technology from engineering and R&D is also required.
A degree (or equivalent) in mechanical, automotive or aerospace engineering is essential. Extensive experience of design and development in the automotive, heavy industry, locomotive, aerospace or consumer product sectors is also required. Chartered Engineering or another recognised professional qualification is beneficial.
