About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious Consultant Paediatric Surgeon to join our well-integrated team at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will join a present team of 8 existing Consultant Paediatric Surgeons in providing comprehensive tertiary Paediatric surgical services to the Northern Region. The post is mainly to fulfil the Trust objectives of greater than 95% theatre utilization by working flexibly to pick up lists which become available due to on-call commitments or leave.

The appointee will also be required to provide an outreach clinic and theatre list on a fortnightly basis. We wish to appoint a surgeon who is comfortable and has experience of minimally invasive techniques.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a comprehensive specialist surgical service for the Northern region.
  • Participate in the management process and contribute to the development of the department.
  • Organise and manage out-patient priorities, surgical waiting lists, and operating lists.
  • Manage and lead surgical 'firms' and participate in the clinical governance structure.
  • Develop a specialist interest in children with congenital and acquired diseases affecting the gastro-intestinal tract and help with deliver Venous access service provision.
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities within the department.
Person Specification
  • MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCS or equivalent postgraduate surgical qualification.
  • FRCS (Paed) or equivalent.
  • GMC registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Higher Degree.
  • Special skills training in the specialty.
Requirements
  • Ability to offer a clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, commensurate with a consultant role.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
  • Ability to provide on-call cover.
  • Able to manage both congenital and acquired diseases of the childhood.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively in seeking optimal outcomes for children.
  • Evidence of experience in minimally invasive surgery for children.
What We Offer

We offer a competitive salary of £105,504 to £139,882 per annum pro rata, a comprehensive benefits package, and opportunities for professional development and growth.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
