Job Summary

The Department for Transport is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Director for External Engagement to lead our external affairs and visits and events teams. As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing effective communication strategies to engage with external stakeholders and promote the Department's goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of external engagement strategies to build and maintain relationships with influential individuals and organisations.
  • Oversee the delivery of high-profile events and visits to promote the Department's work and engage with external stakeholders.
  • Provide expert communications advice to senior leaders and stakeholders, including Ministers and other government officials.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with external partners, including media, industry, and civil society organisations.
  • Identify and manage reputational risks, and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Lead and manage a team of communications professionals to deliver high-quality communications outputs.
Requirements
  • Proven experience in leading external engagement and communications teams in a senior leadership role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and implement effective communication strategies.
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a senior leadership team, and to influence and advise on key policy and communications issues.
