Job Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Pharmacy Technician to join our Aseptic Services team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient provision of chemotherapy services to our patients.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing assistance in the provision of pharmacy aseptic services, including supervision of staff, organisation of day-to-day activities, preparation of cytotoxic products, worksheet and label preparation, and monitoring of the environment.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Participate in co-ordinating the activities for the aseptic unit, supervising staff placement and ensuring safe working practices within the unit.
  • Ensure that aseptic duties are carried out according to national standards.
  • Work towards achieving regional/national accreditations, such as Pre and In Process Checking (PIPC), and maintain an up-to-date portfolio of evidence to meet CPD requirements.
  • Act as a role-model and provide a positive mentoring experience for new and junior staff.

Person Specification

Experience and Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • NVQ Level 3 in pharmacy services or equivalent, BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or Science Manufacturing Technician Level 3.
  • Significant experience working in a hospital pharmacy.
  • Significant experience of working within a pharmacy aseptic unit.

Desirable Criteria

  • Pre and In Process Checking (PIPC) Accreditation or equivalent, or fulfils requirements for undertaking regional course.
  • Educational Practice Supervisor.

Specific Requirements

Essential Criteria

  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC or registered as a Science Manufacturing Technician through an appropriate industry body.

Skills

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrated knowledge and awareness of aseptic unit procedures and systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and awareness of pharmacy dispensing procedures and systems.
  • Experience of staff supervision.

People Management and Development

Essential Criteria

  • Train and supervise new members of staff.
  • Able to implement SOPs and suggest changes to working and training practices.

Freedom to Act

Essential Criteria

  • Accredited to check using regional or in-house checking schemes.
  • High level of motivation and initiative, seeking assistance from others where appropriate.
