Chief Dentist Job Description

The Chief Dentist is a key role within NHS Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), responsible for leading the commissioning of NHS dental services in the region.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for improving access to dental care, workforce development, and oral health promotion.
  • Work closely with dental practices, the wider ICB team, and community and acute providers to improve the quality and effectiveness of dental services.
  • Lead the development of the Primary Care Dental Strategy for the system, ensuring local delivery by building partnerships with those delivering dental services in BSW and with residents using local dental services.
  • Provide dental expertise to support the ICB to commission innovatively, presenting feedback received from dental clinical teams, NHSE, and other stakeholders to inform ICB commissioning plans.
  • Work closely with the Director of Primary Care and BSW's Dental Strategy Group to develop and implement annual priorities and objectives.
  • Be accountable for the delegated budget for commissioning dental services and work to ensure the population's dental needs are met.
  • Promote an open and transparent policy of public engagement and work to ensure that the ICB considers improvement of care that specifically addresses health inequalities.
  • Lead the development of training pathways for dental care professionals across BSW, working in conjunction with NHSE Workforce, Training and Education team.

The Chief Dentist will require strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage with dental clinical teams, stakeholders, and partners to achieve improved patient outcomes.
