Palliative Care Nurse Opportunity

Katharine House Hospice is a renowned 10-bedded in-patient unit providing exceptional palliative care to Oxfordshire and South Northamptonshire.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established nursing team for 9 months, perfect for those seeking palliative care or deputy sister experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Assist the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in providing clinical and managerial leadership to all staff.
  2. Line manage and develop a small team of nurses within the ward establishment.
  3. Lead in a specific area of ward practice/project work on the ward, making recommendations, coordinating projects, and developing practice guidelines and policies based on robust evidence.
  4. Be professionally and clinically responsible to patients within the ward, providing and maintaining a high standard of care.
  5. Maintain and continually develop specialist knowledge and skills relevant to the clinical area.
  6. Regularly act as shift coordinator, participating in the allocation of workload, ensuring efficient bed management, effective patient care, and safety on the ward.
  7. Contribute to the development of clinical practice, communicating this to junior colleagues in a positive manner.
  8. Provide leadership and supervision to junior colleagues within the ward team in the delivery of service.
  9. Ensure appropriate and cost-effective resource management.
  10. Manage challenging situations, such as conflict, complex discharges, and extreme grief.
  11. Support junior staff to develop mentoring and appraisal skills.
Clinical Expertise:
  1. Have relevant specialist training in cancer care or palliative care.
  2. Be professionally accountable for assessment of the patient's needs and development of planned care.
  3. Demonstrate expert knowledge and skills in the management of changing healthcare needs.
  4. Act as a clinical role model, demonstrating a high level of expertise in patient care.
  5. Maintain personal contact with patients, relatives, and carers, being sensitive to their needs.
  6. Provide clinical direction and support to junior colleagues within the ward team.
  7. Demonstrate technical skills, ensuring adherence to trust and local policies.
  8. Assist in the development, introduction, and application of research-based findings to nursing practice.
  9. Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation.
