Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Strategic Planning Officer to join our team at Essential Employment. As a key member of our Development Management Service Team, you will play a crucial role in delivering strategic outcomes and high-quality development in Somerset.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a range of complex planning casework to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Negotiate proposals to deliver high-quality development in accordance with national guidance, planning law, and adopted local plans.
  • Take decisions under the officer scheme of delegation for planning and other related applications.
  • Provide clear direction to deliver strategic priorities and meet financial targets.
  • Support senior colleagues at Area Planning and Strategic Planning Committees.
  • Present applications for decision and update elected members on strategic sites and associated matters.
  • Analyse and evaluate complex technical information to provide professional advice to statutory consultees, other departments, developers, and communities.
  • Balance competing demands of other services and the viability of development to make recommendations and negotiate complex S106 agreements.
Requirements
  • Professional knowledge and experience in planning and development.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
What We Offer

We support hybrid working and expect a presence at the office one day a week. This is a full-time role on a temporary contract basis.
