About the Role

East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking an experienced Retina Examination Specialist to join our team on a part-time basis.

This is an exciting opportunity for an Optometrist or Orthoptist with experience in operating a slit lamp to examine the retina and detect Diabetic Retinopathy.

The successful candidate will work across several community sites within East Sussex, predominantly in the Bexhill and Eastbourne areas.

Responsibilities include undertaking SLB examinations, grading patient retinal images, and completing monthly Test and Training sets for quality assurance purposes.

This role would suit a newly qualified Optometrist looking to gain experience in diabetic retinopathy or someone already working within the diabetic eye screening programme as a slit lamp examiner.

A Diploma in Health Screening may be required depending on the candidate's level of qualification.

Main Duties

As a Retina Examination Specialist, you will be responsible for providing Slit Lamp Bio-microscopy services as part of the East Sussex Diabetic Eye Screening programme.

You will work autonomously, undertaking SLB clinics in community locations using advanced clinical techniques to diagnose signs of diabetic retinopathy and other referable eye conditions.

Collaboration with the DESP team involves grading images, participating in audit and research, and providing teaching/training at Multi-Disciplinary Meetings.

Requirements

  • Registered Optometrist or qualified Diabetic Eye Screener holding the grading unit of the Diploma in Health Screening or historical C&G equivalent and accreditation of Slit Lamp Examination
  • Experience of SLB examination and correct use of the Volk lens to examine the retina
  • Specialist in-depth knowledge of diabetic retinopathy and other referable eye conditions

Salary Information

The estimated salary for this role is £35,000 - £45,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
