We are an online news publisher that was established in 1986 as a national newspaper independent of party political affiliations or proprietorial influence.

In pursuit of sustainability and to safeguard our values and journalism for the future, we became a fully digital publisher in 2016.

As a pioneer in innovation and change, we were the first British newspaper to add a Saturday magazine, give photography prestige, launch a concise quality compact paper, and successfully transform into a fully digital publishing model.

We bring independent journalism to over 100 million unique global visitors a month through our international editorial team, with main offices in London and New York.

The Role

This is a desk-first role with some scope to cover live sporting events. You will be reporting on the biggest talking points in sport, from various disciplines.

A strong background in news and excellent organisational skills are essential, alongside the ability to multitask and communicate effectively.

You will work closely with our team to deliver high-quality content and contribute to our goal of making our voice ever louder and more insistent globally.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Writing clean and legally sound news copy on a variety of sports.
  • Working knowledge of newsroom SEO and trends in sport.
  • Proven track record as a news journalist.
  • Setting up and running live blogs across various sports.
  • Uploading writers' copy and coming up with engaging headlines.
  • Spotting and breaking major developing news stories.
  • Acting swiftly and vocally when issues arise.
  • Being a problem solver with the ability to deal with issues calmly and decisively.
  • Being a team player able to work well with others.
Essential Skills and Experience
  • Experience of working in a similar role at a similar title.
  • Demonstrable experience as a journalist.
  • Familiarity with The Independent and our coverage.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to multitask.
  • NCTJ or equivalent qualification.
  • Ability to clearly communicate best practices.
  • Experience of working in a dynamic fast-paced media environment.
Estimated Salary: £35,000 - £50,000 per annum
