Job Description:

As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you will be responsible for the development, testing, and integration of software for embedded systems forming part of Smiths Detection's next generation of chemical and explosive trace detection products. You will be part of an Agile software team of 3 to 4 engineers reporting to a software team leader.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Software Development: Design, implement, and test software for embedded systems.
  • C++ Programming: Develop software in C++ running on ARM Cortex M33 Microcontrollers.
  • RTOS Development: Develop software for Azure RTOS (ThreadX) including FileX, GUIX, and USBX.
  • Task Management: Use Jira for task assignment, reporting, and defect tracking.
  • IDE Usage: Use mcuXpresso IDE for development.
  • UML Interpretation: Interpret and contribute to UML-based architectural designs.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with software and firmware engineers to integrate and test software running on prototype and production-standard hardware.
  • Architecture Development: Develop and maintain software architecture, interfaces, and documentation.
  • Design Reviews: Participate in design reviews and code reviews.
  • Troubleshooting: Investigate and debug issues.
About You:
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in software development for embedded systems.
  • Programming Skills: Strong programming skills in C and C++.
  • Development Tools: Experience with embedded development tools and processes.
  • Hardware Knowledge: Experience with embedded system design, including knowledge of hardware components and interfaces.
  • Communication Protocols: Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, or USB.
  • Debugging Tools: Experience with software debugging tools and techniques, including JTAG.
  • RTOS Experience: Experience with embedded RTOS (Keil RTX, FreeRTOS, ThreadX).
  • IDE Experience: Experience with IDEs such as Keil uVision, Freescale CodeWarrior, STM32cubeIDE, or NXP MCUxpresso.
  • Processor Expertise: Experience of working with Armv8-M, ARM Cortex-M4, ARM Cortex-M33, or STM32.
  • Clearance Requirements: Must be BPSS cleared on joining and capable of obtaining SC security clearance.
  • Skill Set: Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Communication Skills: Competent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Work Environment: Regular on-site presence at our Hemel Hempstead site will be expected due to the need for close interaction with target hardware.
