Job Summary

To assist cardiologists in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory, acting as a second operator during diagnostic investigations and procedures. Co-ordinate services provided within the laboratory and associated day unit.

Requirements & Responsibilities
  1. Holds first-level registration.
  2. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates programmes of care.
  3. Records vital signs and reports any deterioration of clinical condition to senior nurse.
  4. Recognises life-threatening arrhythmias and summons help.
  5. Performs and interprets ECGs.
  6. Performs venepuncture and cannulation.
  7. ILS trained.
  8. Scrubs for patients undergoing cardiac catheterisation, pacemaker implantation, and PCI.
  9. Teaches and supervises junior staff nurses and unqualified staff.
  10. Ability to lead the unit team if required.
  11. Helps prepare and escort patients under supervision if needed.
  12. Prepares the lab for clinical procedures.
  13. Maintains absolute confidentiality in respect of all medical and nursing records and inter-personal issues with colleagues.
  14. Interprets the significance of the patient's clinical observations and records, making decisions and planning in areas affecting patient care.
  15. Assists with manual handling and transferring of patients complying with the Moving and Handling policy.
  16. Maintains the privacy and dignity of patients and staff at all times.
  17. Delivers a high-quality cardiology service to patients at all times.
Managerial
  1. Leads care management and delivery.
  2. Shares professionalism and clinical expertise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  3. Ensures the provision of a high standard of care to all service users.
  4. Works within the framework of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  5. Acts as a role model for junior staff.
  6. Maintains own professional practice and has knowledge of new developments and concepts.
  7. Promotes and participates in research initiatives.
  8. Ensures adherence to policies, guidelines, and directives at all times.
  9. Maintains a high level of competent practice within the Scope of Professional Practice.
  10. Ensures complete and accurate documentation of all clinical care provided in the department.
  11. Assesses workloads and is aware of changing situations and acts accordingly.
  12. Ensures compliance with all local and national policies.
  13. Participates in audit where appropriate.
  14. Completes all patient documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
Educational
  1. Participates in relevant induction programmes for new staff.
  2. Participates in educational programmes for own professional development, including mandatory training.
  3. Participates in ongoing teaching programmes and staff development.
  4. Acts as an educational resource for others.
  5. Encourages all staff to maintain their own professional practice and keep abreast of current developments and research.
  6. Liaises with managers to ensure that educational needs are met.
  7. Ensures that all members of staff are conversant with and adhere to policies and procedures, local, regional, and national.
  8. Ensures own training needs are met and maintains a development structure that will foster best practice.
  9. Completes reports and records as required by managers.
  10. Deals with complaints in accordance with local and Trust policy.
  11. Maintains effective communication with all service users and the multidisciplinary team.
  12. Attends meetings as required and liaises with outside agencies as appropriate.
  13. Ensures Clinical Governance standards are met with partnership of unit manager/s.
