Job Overview

We are seeking a qualified Planning Lawyer and Senior Planning Lawyer to join our client, a London Borough. The successful candidate will work within the in-house Legal Service's Commercial Team.

The role offers a competitive salary, with bands of £52,116 to £55,155 per annum for a Planning Lawyer and £58,248 to £61,617 per annum for a Senior Planning Lawyer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Planning Lawyer:
    • Draft agreements related to planning and highway functions.
    • Provide legal advice and representation at inquiries or tribunals.
    • Advise on powers and decision-making processes to ensure legality of decisions.
    • Review and advise on committee reports and attend committees.
    • Handle corporate complaints and member enquiries.
    • Lead on corporate and strategic legal work, including major projects and cross-departmental initiatives.
    • Contribute to policy development and implementation.
    • Deal with complex individual casework and conduct litigation.
  • Senior Planning Lawyer:
    • Maintain high standards in delivering the service, working flexibly to achieve objectives.
    • Manage and lead staff to achieve high performance and effective operational delivery.
    • Ensure customer-focused service delivery and resource allocation.
    • Elevate the council's overall vision, values, and ethos within the service.
    • Foster effective working relationships and serve as an ambassador with external organizations.
    • Stay updated on service delivery developments and best practices.
    • Provide specialist legal advice to the Council and external clients.
    • Advise on and draft documentation for complex planning matters.
Requirements
  • A track record of achievement at a management level in a large organization.
  • A strong understanding of planning law and practice.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laws affecting local government and UK/EU trends.
  • Experience advising Council/Board members on legal issues.
  • Experience contributing to corporate decision-making and policy development.
