This is a challenging 12-month fixed-term full-time position for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Medical Microbiology at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTR), based at Royal Preston Hospital.

As a Senior Clinical Fellow, you will work under Consultant supervision to provide medical microbiology services. Your educational supervisor will be a designated Consultant in the directorate.

You may be required to participate in an out-of-hours service as outlined in your training programme and are expected to engage in regular clinical audit and risk management related to microbiology and infection control.

This role does not permit the award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) as it requires completion of a five-year programme.

About the Role
  • Advice on appropriate specimens and investigations
  • Interpretation of results
  • Patient management including antibiotic choice, preventive measures, and policy development

This involves responding to telephone enquiries, attending ward rounds, and managing individual patients on Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) requiring full clinical liaison.

You will also teach medical students, laboratory staff, junior doctors, general practitioners, EHOs, nurses, and other health professionals, including professional supervision and management of junior medical staff as needed.

You are expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills relevant to the duties of the post and register with the General Medical Council.

About Our Trust

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to patient safety and minimising the risk of infection spread. Our multidisciplinary Infection Prevention Control Team (IPCT) supports clinical services to reduce infection risk.

A programme is underway to expand our molecular biology service, and microbiology plays a key role in this development.

The Department is accredited for BMS staff training and approved for medically qualified Microbiologists' training.

We encourage all staff to participate in teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and we can facilitate meeting any training needs for these roles.

The estimated salary for this role is £80,000 - £100,000 per annum, depending on experience.
